Yes. Bowen bodywork is safe and appropriate for all ages, from newborns to those in advanced age. Sessions are always adapted to the individual, with gentle adjustments made for fragile clients, including those who may be bed-ridden or use a wheelchair.

Bowen’s subtle approach allows it to be safely applied across all stages of life while respecting each person’s comfort and needs.

Bowen bodywork is very different from traditional massage. No oils or lotions are used, and sessions are typically performed over light clothing. Rather than working broadly over muscles, Bowen uses gentle, precise movements at specific points in the body, followed by intentional pauses that give the body time to respond.

There is no repetitive rubbing. Many clients find Bowen surprisingly gentle and relaxing while still providing meaningful support for pain, tension, mobility and overall well-being.

Chiropractic care primarily focuses on the alignment of the spine and joints, often using adjustments to improve mobility and function. Bowen bodywork takes a different, complementary approach by focusing on the soft tissues particularly muscles and connective tissue that influence alignment and movement. With Bowen, the goal is to gently release tension patterns in the muscles and fascia that may contribute to strain or imbalance in the body. When these tissues are able to relax and reset, the body can often maintain balance more comfortably. Bowen bodywork and chiropractic care can work well together. Many clients find that addressing soft-tissue tension alongside structural care provides more lasting support and improved comfort. We value collaboration and are always supportive of coordinated care when it benefits the client.

Bowen bodywork is rooted in the original work of Tom Bowen and emphasizes a practical, anatomy-informed approach to supporting the body. Sessions are guided by an understanding of how muscles, connective tissue, and posture interact, and how tension patterns can affect balance and movement. While styles and interpretations of Bowen may vary, our approach focuses on working with the physical body in a grounded, thoughtful way responding to what the body presents. At the Bowen Method Center, sessions are never rushed or shared. We work with one client at a time, and when you book a session, that time is reserved exclusively for you. Your appointment is a full, uninterrupted hour dedicated to your care, allowing space for careful assessment, gentle work, and the body’s natural response. Bowen bodywork is not based on metaphysical or energetic techniques. Instead, sessions are guided by experience, observation, and how your body responds, with room for intuitive awareness that develops through hands-on practice. The goal is to support the body in restoring balance and function in a natural, realistic way.

Most clients begin with three sessions, typically scheduled about seven days apart. This spacing allows the body time to respond, adjust, and continue the healing process between visits without being overworked. Bowen bodywork is gentle, and its effects continue after you leave the office. The work done during a session helps initiate the body’s natural response, which unfolds over several days. Because of this, lasting change usually occurs over a series of sessions rather than in a single visit. After the initial three sessions, we’ll reassess your progress together. Based on how your body has responded and your individual goals, we’ll make a recommendation about whether additional sessions are needed or if you’re ready to pause care. Most clients choose to continue with periodic maintenance sessions, often monthly, to support balance, mobility, and overall well-being. This is always optional and based on personal preference.

Bowen bodywork is performed fully clothed. Please wear soft, loose-fitting clothing that allows ease of movement, such as sweatpants, leggings and a T-shirt. If you’re coming from work or cannot wear comfortable clothing to your appointment, you’re welcome to bring a change of clothes. A private treatment room is available for changing.
